Neon su otkrili britanski kemičari Sir William Ramsay i Morris W. Travers u Londonu 1898. godine.

Otkriven je kad je Ramsay ohladio uzorak zraka dok nije postao tekućina, zatim ugrijao tekućinu i skupljao plinove kako su isparavali.

It is also used in vacuum tubes, high-voltage indicators, lightning arrestors, wave meter tubes, television tubes, and helium-neon lasers.

Liquid neon is used as a cryogenic refrigerant.
